Did you know these diabetic foot care do's and don't?

As we get closer into Summer it is vital for those with diabetes to ensure they check their feet regularly and thoroughly! Diabetes can negatively affect your foot health due to weaker circulation, which can cause sores that can become infected and septic.

In the summer months, bacteria thrive in warm, moist places – like your feet!

Here are a list of things you should do and should avoid doing!

  • Inspect your feet daily
  • Regularly moisturise your feet
  • Wiggle those toes
  • Avoid walking barefoot
  • Keep your feet dry
  • Avoid tight fitting elasticated socks

Why should you inspect your feet daily?

Diabetes can lead to dry and cracked skin that cause become infected and cause big problems. It also increases the likelihood of sores developing. You can prevent these issues with inspections and ensuring your feet are moisturised!

Why shouldn’t you wear tight socks?

Poor circulation (blood flow) can make your foot less able to fight infection and to heal. Diabetes causes blood vessels of the foot and leg to narrow and harden, tight socks can restrict your blood flow further and cause complications. This is why it is important to keep your toes wiggling and circle your ankles!
